I have been playing disc golf or 10 years now, and my passion only grows and grows. I remember that i always wanted to learn how to play, but was always intimidated to go because I never knew where to buy the discs, where the courses were, how to play, who to play with, etc. One day a good friend asked if I wanted to play and I told him that I had never done so before and didn't have any discs. He then drove me to MC Sports in Joliet and I bought a combo pack of Innova discs (a blue Valkyrie {driver}, a yellow Shark {mid-range}, and a red Aviar {putter}). I was skeptical of paying the whopping $15 for the pack, but I have never regretted it.
The first course I played was at Shorewood park, and I still consider it my "home" course. I know every line possible in that place for a descent run, which holes are the easiest to ace (I have 11 at that course alone; 27 total), where to avoid the small water areas, and the easiest places to find lost discs. In fact I now live about 5 minutes from the course. I love this place. I feel so comfortable in this place that I could, and have, played an entire round with a champion Glo Aviar. So, I have a little experience at this place.
These "results", for lack of a better word, have not come over night. Most times when I play now, it is by myself at any place that I can squeeze into my busy schedule. In one of my more recent rounds, I had someone compliment me on my throws. I struck up a conversation with him, and he explained that he has only be playing for a few months and is looking to get better. I remember what it felt like starting out and seeing guys park a disc at every hole. I explained that I had been playing a while and that it has come with numerous trial and error periods. I have played in tournaments, leagues, benefits, by myself, with a partner, in a group, and completed iron man days (4 different courses in one day).
I gave him some of my pointers and I was happy to see that with a few simple weeks to his throw (primarily his follow-through and grip) he was already playing better in just a few holes. That got me thinking that I wanted to give back a share the things that I have learned along the way. I have tried many different techniques and am comfortable with my game. In this blog I will be sharing those tricks that I have the help to increase all aspect of my games. Some topics that I will address in the future are: learning to get aces, running 18 holes in 20 minutes, finding lost discs, my putting grip secret, approach styles, product reviews, course reviews, types of plastic, ground play, different throws, etc.
Please follow my blog if you like what I have to share. If there are any topics that you would like some help with, just leave me some comments. I will also be setting up a Facebook and Twitter page as well.
There's some great weather this weekend, go throw some plastic
